October 2018 - Bird Aware Solent loves local events

Everyone enjoys a free event and this summer the Bird Aware Solent rangers were lucky to have met more than 800 friendly people who showed a passion for our awesome shore birds.

Along the 250kms of Solent coastline the rangers have attended 12 events this summer, and the fun continues.  'Love your Coast' themed days are taking place throughout the October half term at Lepe Country Park, Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve and Royal Victoria Country Park where the team will be on hand to play fun games and share their knowledge of ducks and geese.

Lead ranger Karima Englefield says, 'Events, such as these, are a really good way for us to engage with people. We put on games such as 'How unique is your beak' and 'feeding frenzy' and the children love them as they are fast-paced and exciting.  They also pass on what the birds eat and where they can be found along our shores.'

The event activities help people to understand more about the pressures the birds are under whilst having fun.  Karima explains, 'Many of the games we play involve getting hands dirty or exploring the local area to find clues and crack codes, who needs technology when you have earth and trees!'

Bird Aware Solent is a partnership made up of local authorities and conservation groups that helps to protect iconic birds such as Oystercatchers and Curlews from the growing pressure on their habitats.

Chairman of the Partnership for Urban South Hampshire which set up the Bird Aware Solent partnership, Councillor Se├ín Woodward, adds: 'We are very lucky in the Solent as our coastline is spectacular and it's great that we can enjoy it in many ways.  I love that we have so many beautiful birds flying here from far away places like Siberia, but we must try to protect their habitats.  Their future is in our hands and the Partnership work helps in educating people to protect them.'
