January 2020 - Local photographers are snap happy!

Two amateur photographers in the Solent region have scooped a prize in a competition designed to raise awareness of protected winter birds.

Bird Aware Solent - a local partnership of conservation groups and Solent councils - created the 'Great Solent Birdwatch' to help highlight unique birds such as brent geese, oystercatcher and dunlin.

Lots of people and communities got involved throughout the Solent and the photography competition proved to be a big hit.  Josh Thomas and Darryl Gorman won prizes with their captivating pictures of a little egret fishing and a sanderling sheltering from the wind.

Councillor Se├ín Woodward is Chairman of the Partnership for South Hampshire (PfSH), a body that oversees Bird Aware, was impressed with the photos.  He commented, 'Every bird that returns to the Solent has been on an epic journey to get here. Getting photos like these, highlight why we are so lucky they choose Solent shores as a sanctuary. We must honour the birds by giving them lots of space to feed and rest.'

The event counted an impressive 72 different species of birds and Bird Aware Solent have promised to repeat the event in 2020 because of its success.
